Youth America’s Cup Qualifiers
Red Bull Youth America's Cup group B races during day one of the Red Bull Youth America's Cup on June 12, 2017 in Hamilton, Bermuda.

After the opening action of the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup Qualifiers in Bermuda, the British team Land Rover BAR Academy enjoys a slight lead.

Following Ben Ainslie’s withdrawal from the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Challenger Playoffs with the elite crew, the youth team is in a determined mood. They achieved the first Pool B win by seeing off Spanish Impulse by Iberostar Team.

For the second race, the NZL Sailing Team enjoyed success with a tough win over the Spanish crew. The British team successfully won the last race of the day to gain the overall lead.

Team BDA stayed in contention with a strong second place finish in the third race. But, Candidate Sailing Team and Next Generation USA have a lot of work to shorten the point gap when racing resumes on the Great Sound.

The British yacht, skippered by Rob Bunce narrowly edged out Austria’s Candidate Sailing Team to sail clear after reaching the first upwind mark for a comprehensive win in the AC45 foiling catamarans.

Drawing inspiration from the elite team winning the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Challenger Playoffs, the NZL Sailing Team achieved a comfortable win in race two after putting their earlier disappointments behind them.

The last race initially saw a faceoff between Team BDA and Land Rover BAR Academy at the front of the pack; the Bermudians were able to hold on the second place after a hard fight with the New Zealander team, with British yacht in first place.

Micah Wilkinson, the Kiwi tactician said the teams enjoyed a solid opening day with a tight race course that presented light and fluky conditions.

  1. Hey… The games were interesting, I couldn’t follow up to the final stages though. I’m sure Spain lifted the trophy because the team started well.
